Free Sexual Health Services at Doctor's Surgeries

FREE YOUTH HEALTH CHECK is available for registered patients aged under 26 years at the following General Practices:

  • Ōhope Beach Medical Centre
  • Med Central
  • Riverslea Medical Centre
  • Tāneatua Medical Centre
  • Church Street Surgery
  • Toi Ora Health
  • Whakatōhea Health Centre
  • Kawerau Medical Centre
  • Tarawera Health Centre

Normal consultation charges apply if you are over 26 years old or not registered with the medical practice.

Other doctor's surgeries in the Eastern Bay of Plenty may offer free sexual health services for enrolled patients aged under 26 years. Please enquire with them directly.

Free Sexual Health Services at Whakatāne Hospital

Clinic 1 (Sexual Health Service)

Our FREE and CONFIDENTIAL service, available for all ages, is based at Whakatāne Hospital, and also has weekly school-based clinics at Trident High School and Whakatāne High School.

We offer contraception, pregnancy tests, cervical screening, sexual health check-ups, treatments, advice and information.

Clinic 1 Session Times

Wednesday
12 midday to 5pm
This is mainly a drop-in clinic with limited spaces (so it's first come, first seen).
You will be given an appointment by the receptionist when you arrive and check in.

There are limited number of pre-booked appointments available. If these have not been booked before the start of the clinic, they will become available as drop-in appointments.

Friday
10am to 3pm
This is mainly a booked appointment clinic.
Any appointments that are not booked by the time clinic starts will become available for clients who drop-in (but availability is limited and we cannot guarantee that you will be seen).

Free Sexual Health Services at High Schools

Most secondary schools in the Eastern Bay of Plenty have a school nurse on site. They can also provide you with access to a doctor.

Clinic 1 also provide a weekly clinic at Whakatāne High School and Trident High School.

Make an appointment to see your School Nurse or Sexual Health Nurse. It's FREE and CONFIDENTIAL but you must be an enrolled student.

Youth Sexual Health Education

Our Youth Sexual Health Educator is available to teach a comprehensive sexual health programme aligned with the NZ curriculum for education providers in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. This programme is available to adolescent students in alternative and trade education and special needs centres. It covers the following:

  • Basic Anatomy
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Decision Making/Choices
  • Conception/Pregnancy
  • Gender/Sexuality
  • Body Image/Media
  • STI's
  • Contraception & Abortion
  • Consent & The Law
  • Alcohol/Drugs and Sex
  • Sexual Violence
  • Pornography

Secondary Schools in the Eastern Bay of Plenty can also access this service through the train-the-trainer and professional development programmes.
